Beaver, Lawrence and Mercer Co's

Records show the surname of this family group variously as Harnett, Harnet, and Harnit.

1. James Harnett - Served in the American Revolution. This may be the James Harnet who in 1790 was serving under William Hammond in the Third Company of Militia in the Third Battalion of Northumberland Co, PA. His wife was a girlhood friend of Martha Washington, nee Custis, and it is a matter of family tradition that one time when the women were doing a washing down by the sea coast they covered their heads with a large kettle and a clothes basket and ran from hostile Indians on the banks of the Potomac. The Harnett historical kettle is still preserved as an interesting relic by members of the Harnett family. (Henry Co, MO Bios; PA Archives, Vol III)

Excerpts from Hist of Lawrence Co, PA referring to connection between Samuel Harnet's widow Anna and John Spear, likely the John Speir who married Ann, Samuel's sister: The first settler on the site of the new town of Enon Valley was Samuel Harnit, who came from near McKeesport, in Allegheny county, Pa., first to what is now Beaver county, and in 1800 to the site of Enon, where he settled one hundred acres of Population Land. Before the town was laid out, the only houses standing on the land were Samuel Harnit's old log-house, then occupied by his widow, Mrs. Barbara Harnit, a frame house close by, occupied by her son, Nathaniel Harnit, and a frame house occupied by Samuel Harnit, the latter building on the south side of the railroad track. The first house after the town was laid out was built by John Spear, in one part of which he opened afterward the second store in the place. About a year after the town was laid out, the post-office was removed to it from the old town, and John Spear appointed the first postmaster.
